Hi Jemma Gooley, 
We have been working to improving the user experience for filter search and aware that losing the saved filters could be frustrating. 
You'll be happy to know that next release which is scheduled in a week users will be able to retain the saved filter as long as you do not change/clear the filters or navigate to a different page.

When using the date filter the data is displayed by new to old.

Dayna Maloney: We currently display data in Automatic lab import sorted by new to old (created date) as default. From the filter option you can also the change the sorting to

Alphabetical | A-Z | Z-A
Created date | Old - New
Last modified | Old - New | New - Old
